ABOUT
ABOUT
Strathbrook Farm
We have been farming at Strathbrook since 2014, breeding beef cattle and developing our rural property near Dungog.
Whilst both involved in professional careers, with children and grandchildren, this has not always been an easy task. The farm has required a lot of inputs. In our time, Strathbrook has required updating fences, sheds, cattle yards, roads, stock laneways, amenities, water infrastructure and most recently our new home to share with family and guests.
We have discovered that farmers require resilience beyond any other career we have undertaken.
IN MEMORY OF
Florence Talbot
Florence May Talbot was my paternal grandmother. She was a pioneer in a farming family in the South West Slopes of NSW. We remember her hospitality and unwavering commitment to her family and community.
Early Life & Family
Florence May Talbot was born on 16 October 1897 in Wallup (near Warracknabeal) Victoria, one of a family of five sons and four daughters to Alfred John Charles Talbot (1863-1958) and Alice Eliza Talbot (nee Patterson) (1870-1947).
Alfred was the first child of Alfred Gerald Talbot and Sarah Jane Talbot (nee Webb). Alfred also had a younger sister named Florence May Talbot (1879-1888), who tragically lost her life after a severe burn at 9 years of age.
Alfred Talbot and family moved from farming in Victoria to Ariah Park in 1908 and then to Euroka Station at Quandialla in 1912 to raise their family around the South West Slopes of NSW. The Talbot family dedicated part of the homestead block of Euroka Station to create the township of Quandialla, NSW.
Marriage & Children
Florence married local farmer William (Bill) Thomas Causer on Euroka Station on 7 September 1916. She first met William when he had bought stock to water at the Euroka well. William was born in Grenfell on 15 September 1889. They resided at "Wah Way" Quandialla. They had 10 children (7 boys and 3 girls), who all grew up working the land for a time in and around Quandialla.
Florence also helped care for another two boys who were looking for work and Bill Causer took them on as farm hands. They are still affectionately known as part of the family.
Florence was also known as Floss and Flo and Nanna Causer. William (Bill) Thomas Causer died in Young on 23 June 1959. Florence passed away in 1991, aged 93.
Community Contributions
Florence was a member of the local CWA, the Show Society and the Anglican church in Quandialla. She worked tirelessly for her family and local charities. Florence was a skilled craftswoman.
Legacy
Florence had 44 grandchildren (and approximately 59 great grandchildren). At her funeral in 1991, the procession of cars stretched from Quandialla to Bimbi, showing respect for a woman who had contributed without accolades to her local community. Florence was laid to rest in Bimbi Cemetery with her late husband William (Bill) Thomas Causer.
Florence was my paternal grandmother and was widely known around the district as "Nanna Causer". Nanna Causer is remembered here at Strathbrook as a woman who gave tirelessly to her rural community, focussing on her family and the farm she contributed to developing.
